The BMW Z4 Is a Perfect Dance Partner

BMW Toronto's Jason Foucault reviews the Z4.

The very first BMW I drove was a 2008 Z4, I fell in love then and I fell in love all over again when I got to drive this new generation, top of the line, Z4 sDrive35is with the M-Sport pack. With its always smooth turbocharged inline-six which punches out 335hp and 369lb of torque, there is no questioning the DNA of this car. So without delving too much into the technical aspects of the car, I wanted to describe the experience of driving it.

As a professional dancer, what I look for in a dance partner is fluidity with a sense of confidence, one who responds and reacts to you without resisting and provides you with feedback that you can physically feel. When you put all those together you have art in motion. If a car could be a dance partner, it would be the BMW Z4. There is such a sense intuitiveness with this car, almost more than any other BMW I have driven, due to its sheer sportiness. There is never any questioning how the car is going to respond to your input because of the feedback it gives you. Unlike some other brands I have driven, this car truly likes it when you take the lead.

The Z4 definitely has the muscle to please the men, but what of the women out there? Well, after the children were in bed, my wife took it out for a "short" drive, which included picking up a friend of hers who was already in her pj’s to share the experience with. When she walked through the door hours later, it was the look on her face that said it all, that look spoke more loudly than any words she could express. Joy is something that can’t be hidden.

As always, the styling of the Z4 is a bit polarizing, some love it, while others find it a bit overwrought. I, however, find you can always judge the effectiveness of a cars design and styling by the response of children. So I brought my 6 year old daughter with me to pick up the car and I could see the enthusiasm in her eyes as we approached the Z4 and as I drove away from BMW Toronto she summed it up in three simple words: “Wow, that’s awesome!” Then later, as my 4 year old daughter got her turn in it, she sat there in the passenger’s seat watching the retractable hard top disappear into the boot as she exclaimed: “That’s amazing!” Although my 2 year old son did not get a ride in the car, I had to peel his fingers from the steering wheel. He just didn’t want to get out of it. That, with the fact that everyone in my neighbourhood kept stopping at my driveway to take a look, tells me BMW designed a winner with this Z4.

However you might feel about the exterior styling, there is no debating the luxuriousness and thoughtfulness of the interior. There is no mistaking that you are sitting in a BMW, it is at once conservative yet smart, in both looks and design. The latest iDrive is more intuitive than ever. Although some may still find confusing, in this high- tech era, even my 6 year old could navigate the controls.

Yes, there are certainly other roadsters that people can look at, drive and even buy, however because of BMW’s unrelenting emphasis on building the Ultimate Driving Machines, they have truly made the Z4 a driver’s car. It is for those that not only want to make an impression on the road, but want to be impressed every time they get on the road. It isn’t for those who want to be a wallflower, but want to get right on the dance floor with the perfect dance partner.
