With the arrival of the Neue Klasse, BMW is introducing a new generation of active safety technology designed to provide greater support during driving, parking and even when exiting the vehicle.
First introduced with the new BMW iX3, these technologies will expand to future models including the BMW i3, BMW X5 and BMW 7 Series, with a broader range of active safety features becoming standard across multiple model series.
Safety That Works With You
At the centre of this approach is BMW Symbiotic Drive, designed to better understand the driver's intentions and provide assistance only when it is needed.
For example, the system can recognize signals such as steering input, use of the turn signal or a shoulder check to distinguish an intentional manoeuvre from an unintended lane departure. The result is assistance that works quietly in the background without unnecessarily interrupting the driving experience.
Helping Protect Cyclists When You Exit
One of the most practical new features is an enhanced Exit Warning.
Using side radar sensors, the system monitors for approaching vehicles, cyclists and other road users while the BMW is parked. If a potential collision is detected, the electronic door lock can briefly delay the door from opening until the danger has passed.
For drivers parking along busy Toronto streets, it is a particularly relevant addition.
More Support for Everyday Driving
BMW is also expanding assistance for a range of situations drivers encounter every day.
New and enhanced technology can help steer around unexpected obstacles, provide emergency braking and evasive steering support, and assist when reversing into cross traffic. Active Park Distance Control can also automatically apply the brakes when a potential collision is detected while manoeuvring.
The Attentiveness Assistant with emergency stop goes a step further. If the vehicle detects that the driver is no longer able to continue driving, it can bring the BMW to a controlled stop, activate the hazard lights and initiate an emergency call.
A New Generation of BMW Safety
Behind these features is a new high-performance computer BMW calls the Superbrain of Automated Driving, with approximately 20 times the computing power of the previous system.
The new BMW iX3 has already earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating under the organization's revised 2026 testing protocols.
As this technology expands to more BMW models, drivers will begin to see a new approach to active safety: technology designed to remain discreet during everyday driving and step in when it matters most.
